What size dining table fits your room and your guests?
Allow 24 in (61 cm) per diner, 28 in for a generous setting, and at least 36 in (91 cm) from the table to the wall, 42–48 in where people walk behind chairs. A table for 8 is about 96 × 40 in; for 12, about 144 × 48 in.
A 10′ × 42″ table seats 10 and fits this room; it could seat up to 10 with that clearance.
| Size | |
|---|---|
| Table | 10′ × 42″ |
| Rug (chairs stay on it when pulled out) | 14′ 11⅞″ × 8′ 6″ · nearest standard 12 × 15 ft |
| Chandelier over the table | 21″ – 28″ across |
| Chairs | 4 each side + 2 at the ends |
- For 10 or more, a 42–48 in (107–122 cm) wide table keeps serving dishes in reach and lets you seat one at each end comfortably.

How we work it out
Table length = 24 in per diner along each side (28 in for a generous setting) plus 12 in at each end for corners; one diner at each end. Width grows with the table: 38 in up to 6 seats, 42 in for 8–10 and 48 in for 12 or more, so dishes stay within reach. Round tables allow the same space per diner around the edge. The table must leave your chosen clearance to every wall: 36 in lets a chair pull out, 42–48 in lets someone walk behind a seated guest.
The rug is the table plus 30 in on every side, so chair legs stay on it when chairs are pulled out; we give the nearest standard size or tell you it needs to be made to measure. The chandelier follows the table rule: ½ to ⅔ of its width.
Questions
What size table seats 8?
About 96 × 40 in (244 × 102 cm) rectangular, or a 60–72 in (152–183 cm) round table. Allow a room about 15 × 12 ft or more to keep 36–42 in of clearance.
What size table seats 10 or 12?
For 10, about 120 × 42 in (305 × 107 cm); for 12, about 144 × 48 in (366 × 122 cm). Wider tables make big dinners more comfortable.
How big should a dining room rug be?
At least 24–30 in larger than the table on every side, so the chairs stay on it when pulled out. For a 96 × 40 in table that's about 8 × 10 ft; for 144 × 48 in, about 10 × 16 ft, usually made to measure.
