Do you need a visa for a Foshan buying trip?
Australians can visit China for up to 30 days without a visa until 31 December 2026. US citizens need a visa, unless they use 240-hour visa-free transit: flying in from one country and out to a different one (Hong Kong counts) within 10 days, which covers all of Guangdong, including Foshan.
You can use 240-hour visa-free transit.
You can use 240-hour visa-free transit
- US passports can stay up to 240 hours (10 days) without a visa when flying in from one country and on to a different country or region: for example US → Guangzhou → Hong Kong, or Hong Kong → Shenzhen → US.
- Enter at an eligible port: Guangzhou Baiyun airport, Shenzhen Bao'an airport and the main Shenzhen–Hong Kong crossings are eligible. Tell the airline at check-in that you're using 240-hour transit.
- Stay within the permitted area: Guangdong province, which includes Foshan, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
- Carry a passport valid for at least 3 more months and a confirmed onward ticket (date and seat) within 240 hours; the clock starts at midnight after you arrive. A round trip US → China → US does not qualify.

How we work it out
We check your passport against China's visa-free entry list, the 240-hour visa-free transit rules and the permitted stay area (Guangdong province includes Foshan, Guangzhou and Shenzhen). The rules are the official ones on the date shown; they have changed several times since 2024.
