Container rates from China as of 16 October 2026, why they're still high, East vs West Coast, the 2027 US tariff step-up and when to order furniture.
Shipping a 40-foot container of furniture from China to the US West Coast costs about US$7,900 on the spot market this week, and close to US$10,100 to New York, according to Drewry's World Container Index of 16 October 2026. For a whole-house order, SVIKARR's team in Foshan fills one container and books it with a forwarder, so ocean freight usually works out to a few hundred dollars per room, not per piece.
That's the short answer. The longer one matters more, because the price of a container is only one of the numbers moving this autumn. China's exports are surging, the yuan is firming, the Red Sea is unsettled again, and the US tariff on upholstered furniture is scheduled to rise on 1 January 2027. Here's what each of those means for someone furnishing a house, written from our desk in Foshan.
What does a container from China cost right now?
Spot rates for a 40-foot container (one FEU) range from about US$3,500 to Northern Europe to just over US$10,000 to the US East Coast this week. These are port-to-port ocean rates from Shanghai, before local charges, customs, duty and the truck to your door.

| Route (40 ft) | Rate, 16 Oct 2026 | Week change |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai to Los Angeles | US$7,884 | +3% |
| Shanghai to New York | US$10,075 | -1% |
| Shanghai to Rotterdam | US$3,522 | +6% |
| Shanghai to Genoa | US$3,945 | +7% |
| Global composite | US$4,485 | +3% |

Our furniture leaves from the Pearl River Delta (usually Nansha or Shekou), not Shanghai. South China rates track the Shanghai index closely but aren't identical, so treat the table as the direction of travel and ask your forwarder for a quote from the actual port.
A 40-foot high-cube holds about 55-65 cubic meters of furniture, which is roughly a whole house of sofas, beds, dining, casegoods and lighting. At this week's Los Angeles rate, that's around US$120-145 of ocean freight per cubic meter.
Why are rates still this high in 2026?
Because ships are slow, not because there's too little space. Container ships ran an average of six days late in the third quarter, and only 4% of Asia-Europe sailings arrived on time in September, according to Xeneta data reported by Daily Cargo News. Late ships mean fewer round trips a year, which works like a capacity cut.
A few other things are holding prices up:
- About 8.5% of the world's container fleet was tied up in delays in early October, per Sea-Intelligence and Freightos figures cited in Czarnikow's Freight Monthly.
- Houthi attacks on Saudi targets this week have raised the risk of renewed Red Sea disruption, just as carriers had started sending more Asia-Europe ships back through Suez (FreightWaves).
- Carriers are opening 2027 contract talks at historically elevated rates, though some shippers expect prices to ease next year as new ships arrive.
There's also a softer side. Asia-Europe rates had fallen for 13 weeks in a row before this week's bounce, down 34-43% from their July peaks, per Czarnikow. And the National Retail Federation expects US ocean arrivals in November to drop 11% from October as peak season ends, which usually eases transpacific prices (FreightWaves).
Does China's export boom affect my furniture order?
Mostly through the calendar and the currency, not the factory floor. China's exports rose 36.3% in September from a year earlier, and its trade surplus for January to September reached US$938.1 billion, according to customs data reported by the Associated Press. Analysts link much of that growth to semiconductors and cars, not sofas.
What reaches a furniture buyer is this:
- Busy ports and ships. More boxes leaving China means more competition for space on popular sailings, especially in the weeks after Golden Week (1-7 October) and before Chinese New Year.
- A firmer yuan. Reuters reported on 16 October that the yuan was set to strengthen for a third straight week on the back of strong exports. Foshan factories price in yuan (¥). When the yuan rises, the same ¥8,000 bed at Sunlink North costs a few more dollars.
- Trade politics. The US and China extended their tariff truce in September, per the same AP report. That truce doesn't remove the separate Section 232 duty on upholstered wooden furniture.
We quote every factory price in yuan and convert at the day's rate, so you can see exactly how much of any change is currency and how much is the factory.
Is it cheaper to ship to the East Coast or the West Coast?
West Coast, by a wide margin this year. Xeneta put the gap between East Coast and West Coast rates from the Far East at US$3,177 per container on 1 October, against roughly US$772 before this year's Strait of Hormuz disruptions, as reported by Czarnikow.
If your home is in Florida, the Carolinas or the Northeast, it can be worth pricing two routes: all-water to an East Coast port, or a West Coast port with rail or truck across the country. For Texas, Houston by sea and Los Angeles plus inland trucking are both worth quoting. Which wins depends on the week, the port and the distance from the port to your driveway, so we ask the forwarder for both before booking.
When should I order to ship at a sensible price and on time?
For a house you want furnished by spring 2027, order in the next few weeks. Production is usually 30-60 days, sea transit 2-4 weeks, and you should plan 3-4 months door to door. Chinese New Year (late January to mid February) closes factories for weeks, and anything not finished before the holiday waits until after it.
Book the container and lock the duty plan before you fall in love with the freight rate: a cheaper box that arrives after 1 January can cost you far more in tariff than it saves in shipping.
That tip is about the US. Section 232 duty on upholstered wooden furniture has been 25% since 14 October 2025 and is scheduled to rise to 30% on 1 January 2027; kitchen cabinets and vanities are scheduled to go from 25% to 50% (STR trade report). Other duties can apply on top for Chinese goods, depending on the product code. The rate generally follows the date the goods are entered at US customs, so ask a licensed customs broker how your entry date affects your bill, as of October 2026. Rules change, and nobody should promise you a rate.
Honestly, if you need furniture in under eight weeks, buying from China isn't the right choice this season. Local stock will be faster, even if it costs more.
What about Australia and Europe?
Europe is the cheapest lane this autumn, at about US$3,500-3,900 per container to Rotterdam and Genoa. For Australia we don't have a reliable public index figure for this week, so we won't quote one: ask your forwarder for a Nansha-to-Sydney or Shekou-to-Melbourne rate on the day.
The duty side for Australia is simpler than the US. Many furniture goods from China can enter at 0% duty under ChAFTA with a valid certificate of origin, though 10% GST still applies and timber packaging must meet ISPM-15 and biosecurity rules (as of October 2026; check your tariff code on the DFAT FTA Portal).

For UK and European buyers, the bigger risk is time, not money: Asia-Europe ships are running close to ten days late on average, per Xeneta via Daily Cargo News. Build that into your move-in date.
How much of my budget is freight, really?
Less than most people expect, if the container is full. Ocean freight on a full 40-foot box to Los Angeles is about US$7,900 this week. If that container holds, say, US$100,000 of furniture at factory prices (an illustration, not a quote), ocean freight is under 8% of the goods. Half-empty containers are where the maths goes wrong, because you pay for the whole box.
The other line items are worth knowing:
- Local charges at both ports, customs clearance and the customs broker's fee.
- US duty or Australian GST, calculated on the goods.
- The truck from the port to your home, and unpacking.
- Insurance, which we always recommend on a whole-house shipment.
When we plan a consignment, we size the order against the container first, then decide what to add or leave out. It's a small step that saves real money.
Key takeaways
- A 40-foot container from Shanghai to Los Angeles costs about US$7,900 on the spot market as of 16 October 2026, and about US$10,100 to New York.
- Rates are high mainly because ships are late, which removes capacity; analysts expect some softening after the peak season.
- West Coast routing is much cheaper than East Coast this year, so price both if you live in the East.
- The US Section 232 duty on upholstered furniture is scheduled to rise from 25% to 30% on 1 January 2027: plan your entry date with a customs broker.
- A full container keeps freight to a small share of a whole-house order; a half-empty one doesn't.
Questions buyers ask
Should I wait for freight rates to fall before ordering?
Usually not. Rates may soften after peak season, but waiting risks running into Chinese New Year and, in the US, a higher Section 232 rate from 1 January 2027. The tariff difference on a whole-house order can easily outweigh any freight saving.
Is LCL (shared container) cheaper for a smaller order?
For a few pieces, yes, because you pay per cubic meter instead of for the whole box. Handling is greater, though, and pieces are loaded and unloaded with other people's cargo. Once your order is past roughly half a container, a full container is often similar in cost and safer.
Does the yuan's rise change the price I agreed?
Not if your price is fixed in US dollars. If it's fixed in yuan, the dollar cost moves with the exchange rate until you pay. We show both, so you can decide when to pay the deposit and the balance.
How long does a container take from Foshan to my home?
Plan 3-4 months door to door: 30-60 days of production, 2-4 weeks at sea to the US West Coast or Australia, plus customs and delivery. Ships are running late this year, so add a buffer to any move-in date.
If you're weighing a whole-house order this season, our team in Foshan can price the pieces, size them against a container and get real freight quotes from the port, so you see the full landed picture before you commit.
